How do you inspire yourself to work out when you're just not in the mood?

Great question. It is not a one-size -fits-all answer, though. Each one of us has a way of feeling and being in the world that is unique. It always helps me to remember that the biggest challenge is getting started. Just do it. I hate the overused line, but it holds a big truth. Don’t wait to become inspired, just get up (or get down on your mat) and start the practice.

Sometimes it helps to turn on music; sometimes it helps to remember what my goals are; sometimes it helps to remember that I will want to keep going once I start going. I have friends who only work out with a buddy (accountability is great!) I have friends who make themselves a version of the “star chart” so they have a visual reminder about how faithfully they have practiced.

The more you can maintain your commitment to your practice in spite of your motivational ups and downs, the stronger those connections become in your brain. Feel the inclination to slack off, but do the work anyway. You’ll feel great about yourself.
