When I get a massage, I sometimes cry. Why is that?

The body is a beautiful and sometimes mysterious storehouse of memories and feelings. One possible answer to your question is that tension masks sensation and as we allow tension to melt from our physical body during a relaxing massage, those buried sensations float to the surface and are released. Some people cry from the relief of finally being able to let go. Sometimes crying is triggered in much the same way that a beautiful piece of music may trigger tears in a person. It is good that you are feeling safe and comfortable enough with your massage therapist to allow your feelings to flow freely. A good cry often leaves us feeling refreshed and unburdened.
